Lately, I’ve been spending time finishing/editing paintings that have been “marinating” for weeks or sometimes months. My creativity comes in waves and I’ve found this is the best way to complete some work even though I’ve been feeling a little stuck. When I was an art teacher, I always told the students to keep the work that they "messed up." These mistakes are really pieces that are just not quite finished; bringing a fresh eye to an old piece can lead to some amazing things. I was working with a woman named Patti in the education department of the Denver Art Museum and she called these "happy accidents." The hardest thing to teach (and the live by) is embracing these moments for what they are, a great beginning. "Ebb and Flow" is an important piece to me because it came about after waiting for my creativity to come back to me; it started as a happy accident and has become one of my favorite pieces.
